25/11/2011 Occupy London

November 25, 2011

Should have a little movie of this – but it was all too ‘upon us’ to fumble for the camera. Around 8pm (when General Assembly was in full flow), there was a sudden, joyful sound travelling fast on the road by the cathedral entrance – a flash mob of cyclists !  They had a great sound system (pedal-powered naturally) and there were lots and lots of them, whooping and cheering.  I really can’t estimate how many there were – it was all so great and unexpected that I was just caught up in the moment.  They were raising their bikes in the air and we were all smiling and feeling so happy on a cold night.  It probably lasted 10 minutes in total. A lone policeman looked on, expressionless, though I find it hard to believe he didn’t enjoy it. Then they got back on their bikes and cycled off into the night.

It took a while to get back to ‘normal’. I don’t know about anybody else, but I felt sort of ordinary compared with the magic they managed to create. Oh well – back to the coal face!
